The problem with reading the first volume in an awesome new graphic novel series is now I have to wait for the next one! Whamp, whamp。

The creepy small town where outsiders aren't welcome lest they stumble on its dark secret – pretty much a subgenre in its own right。 But goodness, this one fits the times to a tee。 As with so many new series over the past few months, I don't know whether the concept preceded the Event, but it's hard to read the restive citizens of Stillwater bridling at being cut off from any family and friends beyond walking distance, or the line in defence of outmoded habits from a long-gone life, "Sometimes。。 The creepy small town where outsiders aren't welcome lest they stumble on its dark secret – pretty much a subgenre in its own right。 But goodness, this one fits the times to a tee。 As with so many new series over the past few months, I don't know whether the concept preceded the Event, but it's hard to read the restive citizens of Stillwater bridling at being cut off from any family and friends beyond walking distance, or the line in defence of outmoded habits from a long-gone life, "Sometimes。。you just want to feel like nothing changed, especially when nothing changes", and not take it as the 2020s recast。 Of course, because even horror stories tend to be preferable to the real world nowadays, unlike us they do at least get a countervailing benefit: in Stillwater, nobody ages, or dies, and any injury from the smallest to the most horrific will heal in next to no time。 The story is pretty good at working through the ramifications of this; so the townsfolk can't even get drunk to kill time, and they have an awful lot of time to kill; equally, brutal violence becomes a perfectly normal way to deal with a minor annoyance, because it doesn't have any lasting consequences。 And yet where that could easily have turned the situation cartoonish (compare and contrast The Old Guard, or at least the comics version), Perez' art does keep it grounded and disturbing。 Speaking of 'grounded', the town's alternative to prison。。。yeah, it makes sense, and it's really not nice。Fundamentally, though, it does feel very much as if it's operating within an established field, as against the eye-catching pitch on a previous Zdarsky Image book such as Kaptara ('snarky gay guy finds himself in an off-brand Masters Of The Universe')。 It's early days yet, but thus far few of the characters have come alive as the individuals they need to be for a constricted story like this to really sing - and it doesn't help that events at the end of this volume suggest Stillwater will be moving at a breakneck pace, robbing the reader of the slow build and gradual familiarisation which bolster a comparable series such as Revival。 It's also early days for the town's anomaly; lines like "I've been doing this a long time" lose a lot of their force when the town has only been outside entropy since 1986, so still well within the time that a mortal person might have been engaged in any of these jobs, especially in a backwater。 There's also, though this is hardly the first Image book thus afflicted, some really iffy editing; a single speech bubble manages to use both 'principle' and 'principal' when it only wants one, as if deciding to split the difference and make sure at least one is correct, and an already deliberately contorted sentence becomes a horribly fluffed reveal when it's rendered as "welcome to the the welcome party"。 。。。more

Modern thriller set in small town USA with a nice twist。Daniel gets invited to Stillwater, a small town, where he discovers that the inhabitants cannot die。 This brings about a series of occurrences, bringing the residents into conflict。 The characters are well defined and the story moves along well。 The artwork is simple and effective。 It’s an interesting and original concept。 Good stuff。 This is a review of all of the issues except the last one as Image haven’t sent me that one。 This is in exc Modern thriller set in small town USA with a nice twist。Daniel gets invited to Stillwater, a small town, where he discovers that the inhabitants cannot die。 This brings about a series of occurrences, bringing the residents into conflict。 The characters are well defined and the story moves along well。 The artwork is simple and effective。 It’s an interesting and original concept。 Good stuff。 This is a review of all of the issues except the last one as Image haven’t sent me that one。 This is in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Reminds me in spirit if not storyline of Revival。。an Image series of a while back。

I’m actually so-so on this book。 The art is a sort of soft watercolor that is quite beautiful at times。 This story holds few surprises once the premise becomes clear。 But I’m hoping for more in the next volume。

Good start to an interesting premise。 Can’t wait to read more as “shits about to hit the fan”

I enjoyed this enough to finish it, and bravo to Chip Zdarskh for writing characters I truly disliked。 I don't know that I want to read book 2。 I enjoyed this enough to finish it, and bravo to Chip Zdarskh for writing characters I truly disliked。 I don't know that I want to read book 2。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ends with Tommy his mom and the rest of the welcome gang getting denied about letting the outside world find out about them。 The doc blows up the town hall meeting。 The judge is in pretty bad shape and the deputy Ted guy brings in his buddies from war that have been hiding out in the woods to help with the rioting problem。

Interesting premise and well told, definitely want to see where this goes。 An angry young man stumbles into a town of people that never age。 How these people have maintained this secret is the big mystery and the truly horrific part。

Jacob Snider

I really enjoyed this one。 It has a feeling of weird, but also normal that just works。

Zdarsky is so good in writing down realistic conversations that you're okay with the fact that this first volume comes a bit short when it comes down to setting up the story。 Nevertheless the idea is engaging enough for me to keep listening。 Zdarsky is so good in writing down realistic conversations that you're okay with the fact that this first volume comes a bit short when it comes down to setting up the story。 Nevertheless the idea is engaging enough for me to keep listening。 。。。more

This is a fantastic first volume of what one hopes will be a long, slow-burning story。 The tale of a town where nobody dies and the local tyrants who keep anyone from leaving sets up a power struggle that feels at once both local and epic, with things swiftly getting out of hand once somebody from the outside upsets the town’s delicate balance。 Zdarksy’s writing is crisp and engaging, and Perez’s art is, as always, huge fun to take in, and perfectly suited for this story。 Bring on Volume 2。

Trike

This is basically just the opening, a slow burn set-up, and it’s intriguing enough that I’ll pick up the next one。I do wonder if Zdarsky did a self-high-five when he came up with the name Stillwater for a town where nothing ever changes, because it’s almost too perfect。

Solid first entry into a new series。 I'll admit I was hyped up for this new series from Chip Zdarsky。 I think he is one of the best new voices in comics。 The premise of the comic is great stuff。 I truly enjoyed this first volume but it started out rather slow。 Coming in blind would have helped but the first issue or so sets up mysteries the back cover spoils。 Once the book gets going it becomes something really special。 There is so much material for Chip to work with and I cannot wait to see wha Solid first entry into a new series。 I'll admit I was hyped up for this new series from Chip Zdarsky。 I think he is one of the best new voices in comics。 The premise of the comic is great stuff。 I truly enjoyed this first volume but it started out rather slow。 Coming in blind would have helped but the first issue or so sets up mysteries the back cover spoils。 Once the book gets going it becomes something really special。 There is so much material for Chip to work with and I cannot wait to see what direction he chooses to take things。 The cliffhanger really got me and I cannot wait for vol 2。 I'm new to the art of Ramon K Perez and it's safe to say I'm a big fan。 Perez is a excellent storyteller and really shines with character expressions。 They also do a great job of establishing a very realistic look for the book。 Shoutout to Mike Spicer on the colours as well。 They do some great work with lighting and especially with fire。 Overal this is a smashing good start to a series。 It stumbles in getting going but once the story takes off it doesn't seem like much could stop it。 。。。more

You could pick apart the premise of Stillwater all day if you wanted or you can let Zdarsky take you on a ride。 I recommend the latter。 He delivers a sense of place and character and sets up the stakes and connections of this story from page one。

I'm just on the verge of liking this, but it is a little too generic in its exploration of immortality and small town paranoia。 On a page by page basis, it is engaging enough, but while it toys around with some of the interesting aspects of immortality, it seems content to let the story be driven by some real unoriginal and heavy-handed villains, while the heroes don't really have much going for them。 I'll give the second volume a chance to win me over when it comes out。 I'm just on the verge of liking this, but it is a little too generic in its exploration of immortality and small town paranoia。 On a page by page basis, it is engaging enough, but while it toys around with some of the interesting aspects of immortality, it seems content to let the story be driven by some real unoriginal and heavy-handed villains, while the heroes don't really have much going for them。 I'll give the second volume a chance to win me over when it comes out。 。。。more

Stillwater is American folk horror。 Small town with a secret that they’ll do anything to protect。 An average joe visitor, who doesn’t fit in outside but certainly rejects this new setting。 An underground rebellion。 And, because it’s America, a bunch of guns and the psychopaths who love to use them。Some sloppy mistake early on aside, the art here is great。 Clean and distinct figures that give each character an instant recognition。 I do wish they would play the horror more。

In the town of Stillwater, people don’t age and can’t die。 This utopian-sounding town is the setting of a horror along the lines of Wayward Pines or Netflix’s 1BR。 The protagonist, Daniel, learns the hard way that once you learn the town’s secret, there’s no leaving it (unless that is to take you outside its borders and execute you)。 An interesting idea that ultimately doesn’t work。 It lacks any interesting characters and it’s hard to believe a small town would have the ability to keep this secr In the town of Stillwater, people don’t age and can’t die。 This utopian-sounding town is the setting of a horror along the lines of Wayward Pines or Netflix’s 1BR。 The protagonist, Daniel, learns the hard way that once you learn the town’s secret, there’s no leaving it (unless that is to take you outside its borders and execute you)。 An interesting idea that ultimately doesn’t work。 It lacks any interesting characters and it’s hard to believe a small town would have the ability to keep this secret for so long。 I mean, do they kill every Amazon Prime driver who sees something weird happen? What happens when you go to a town and can't。。。well。。。die? This town is at a standstill。 In stillwater you go, and you can get shot, punched, kicked, head chopped off, and so on and still survive。 Little did Daniel know that when he entered this town it wouldn't be the FIRST time he's been there。 What seems like a town filled with secrets is。。。well a town filled with secrets。 Chip is a pretty great writer。 Almost all his Marvel work has been top notch。 So I was pretty excited to try this one on。 What happens when you go to a town and can't。。。well。。。die?
